Revitalizing Spaces: The Photo Company's Studio Transformation

Lovekar Design Associates' Innovative Reuse of Abandoned Factory Premises

Lovekar Design Associates have breathed new life into an abandoned factory complex, transforming it into a vibrant photography studio for The Photo Company. This award-winning design project is a testament to the power of adaptive reuse and sustainable design practices.

The inspiration for this project was drawn from the local Indian folk architecture and colors of western India. This style is known for its cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and organic nature. The architecture is typically low-rise with thick mud or stone walls, and living areas derive light and ventilation through central courts instead of large windows. The design of The Photo Company's studio complex reflects these characteristics, with the added touch of modernity and innovation.

The unique feature of this design project is its adaptive reuse of the existing factory premises. The designers managed to maintain the original footprints of the structure while transforming it into a functional and aesthetically pleasing space. Unused spaces were utilized to create transition and interactive areas, merging interiors and architecture to make the space look larger. The alterations were stimulating, low cost, and earthy, reflecting the ethos of the brand.

The design was realized using a combination of new and old materials. The existing brick walls were re-used and re-plastered by hand using an age-old Indian technique, which gives an uneven rustic surface. The doors and windows were made using recycled local wood, while the flooring and walls were made of in-situ cement, known as Indian Patent Stone (IPS).

The studio complex, located in Talawade, an industrial region on the outskirts of Pune, India, measures approximately 500 sq.m. The project started in February 2016 and was completed in May 2016. The complex comprises of three parts: the office, the studio, and the image processing unit. The studio can be accessed by another gate to allow the flow of heavy vehicles and equipment for photo shoots.

This project was not without its challenges. The most difficult part was reusing the existing structures and rebuilding them to suit the new user. The selection of the architectural language for the new structure was an interesting challenge, and a contemporary design solution with modern adaptations of ethnic Indian building techniques and colors was the final choice. This design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017, a testament to its remarkable design and innovation.
